Laughing and Singing Reflections
We had our second in-person book club meeting where we continued our discussion of the Wild Feminine. The week’s chapter had lots of information about physical and emotional self-care. I felt that I was doing the physical, meditation, bodywork and exercise items with no problem.
Then there was a section called ‘Laugh, Sing and Nourish Yourself’. Mmmmm… I really felt these to be about emotional self-care. This seems to be an area where I need a tune-up.
Let’s start with ‘laughing’. I enjoy the antics of my cats and the people around me. I find lots of the items on social media to be pretty funny. I don’t watch television, but I will watch the occasional movie. The movies are always G rated. I can’t handle the violence of PG and R movies. This I feel is an example of where I am cultivating opportunities for laughing and saying no to those things that are the opposite.
‘Singing’ is next. No, I am not a singer, but I do enjoy a variety of music. I might sing along with a song… if no one is around . I love to chant and ‘tone’ but do these qualify as singing? Singing, chanting and toning are about making sound from my own voice. I looked up the definition of music and it read “vocal or instrumental sound to create beauty, harmony and expression of emotion”. I am doing emotional self-care by doing my style of “singing”. What a wonderful realization!
Finally, ‘Nourish Yourself’. I think ‘Nourish’ is talking about doing things that facilitate health and are supportive of my self-growth. I also think that nourish is about a sustained effort in these areas. If I get a new plant, it needs to be nourished if it is going to live. This is the same for me. What are my health and self-growth things? Walks, walks holding hands, reading a book, a good cup of tea, a warm bath before bed, a cat in my lap. This is a short list. I think my homework is to reflect on and list all those things in my life that nourish me. What does your list look like?
