Reflections on Gut Troubles
There has been much talk in healthcare circles recently around gut/digestive issues and how to deal with these. I can totally relate to the topic. I have had gut/digestive problems all my life and have tried many different approaches to “fixing” these.
My first attempts were through diet. I was raised on a beef and dairy farm in Kentucky. There was nothing missing from the ‘menu’ when it came to overly rich food choices! Red meat, dairy, bread, fried foods, desserts (lots of these)! When I left home for college, I began experimenting with my diet to see if I could help my upset stomach. I love sweet treats. I know how very hard it is to say “no thank you” when everyone else is eating ‘it’, but I had to want my health more than the cookie or the pie. There began my journey of healing, and the evolution of my feelings and thoughts about my health and well-being
Diet changes helped somewhat, but I wanted more ease! So, I continued my experiments with supplements including pre-biotics and probiotics. I took apple cider vinegar before and after eating; tried liquid diets. I used lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper cleanses. Soooooo many things I tried!
There is no one answer
I finally realized there was no single magic pill or diet that was going to solve my riddle. A complete lifestyle overhaul was needed. I needed to bring it all together. Now I drink lots of water, go for my walk every day and spend time planning my meals. I eat a mostly plant-based diet. No red meat, no dairy and very few sweets. I meditate and keep a peaceful home and work environment. I use a salt scrub every morning for my lymph system and do a daily abdominal massage to help with balance. Don’t get me wrong, there are still days when the ‘program’ doesn’t seem to be working, but these days are fewer and further between.
It has been a challenging journey, but I am determined (some may say stubborn) to feel well! I am reminded of how far I’ve come when someone complains about a stomachache. I am deeply grateful for all that I have learned.
This has been my formula for improving my gut and digestive health. What will yours be? There is no ‘one size fits all’. Everyone needs to discover their own unique program!
I cover some of the aspects of creating a balanced, individualized approach to health in the Energetic Self Care workshop on December the 8th. Please join us and start your own journey.
