Stepping into Energy Mastery: Reflections on My Journey
I am collaborating with a colleague on a new set of workshops called the Energy Mastery Series. Our goal is to share with others some of our knowledge and skills hard-earned over the course of our careers. Our collaboration has me reflecting on the journey of learning that has taken me from ‘newbie’ to the practitioner I am today.
Why the title ‘Energy Mastery’ for these workshops?
What is meant by mastery? From an online dictionary, mastery is defined as ‘comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject’. With over 40 years of training and experience helping clients, I can fairly say my skills and knowledge are comprehensive.
My relationship with energy
How about Energy? I think my relationship with Energy started when I was quite young. I was born and raised on a 240-acre farm in Kentucky. We had lots of animals, a huge garden, and fruit trees. Crops were planted and harvested after consulting the Farmers’ Almanac. Successful farming was all about interpreting and appropriately responding to the Energy of our animals, crops and nature. We were in harmony with our surroundings.
From the farm, I went to college. I wanted to be a doctor and for many reasons ended up deciding on a degree in Occupational Therapy which at the time was a little known profession.
Occupational Therapy was a perfect fit for me. It was all about analyzing the challenges faced by my patients as they dealt with day-to-day tasks, and coming up with creative ways to help them overcome these challenges and remain independent. Interpreting and appropriately responding. In this way, Occupational Therapy was an evolution of the skills I had developed on the farm.
As an occupational therapist, I came to realize that my colleagues were giving me tough patients because I could figure out how to motivate them to participate in their rehabilitation. I realized after some time that I was picking up on something not taught in school. Curious, I started reading to try to figure out what was going on. After some research, I discovered a conceptual framework that described what I was innately doing. I was unknowingly ‘reading their Energy’. I was interpreting Energy and intuitively developing strategies to relate, motivate, and help. The more research I did the more I found words to describe my experience of the world. I knew more than I was taught.
Back to the definition of Mastery. The word ‘skill‘ means the ability to do something well, or the possession of expertise. I have no third-party certification that tells me I am an expert. Rather, my clients have taught me through their feedback that I am listening to Energy, hearing and understanding what their Energy is saying, and from that understanding helping them. I consider myself skilled in my ability to listen to and help my clients. They are my teachers.
My journey with energy continues and I learn something new each day.
I have been teaching energy workshops for almost 20 years. Each class has built upon the prior, a journey to the next level in my understanding of Energy. The Energy Mastery Series is about sharing this with others. We want to pass along what we have learned. We want this to be reproducible. I hope we can share this journey with you.
Stay tuned for more information on the first workshop in the series, and Save the Date – July 19, 2020.
