Tales of the Taoist Immortals by Eva Wong:
book review by Cindy Mattingly
Each “chapter” is short so easy to fit into a busy schedule. This is a collection of Chinese storytelling that Eva heard growing up in Hong Kong. It begins with The Eight Immortals, the most famous of the Taoist Immortals, and they are in their own section. They represent the many aspects of the Taoist spirituality. The other immortals are listed in the category for which they are best known for…….sages, magicians, diviners and alchemists. In the Taoist tradition the stories of the immortals are meant to teach as well as entertain.
My favorite is Chuang Tzu, a sage,……”I dreamed that I was a butterfly fluttering among the flowers. Was I a man dreaming that I am a butterfly? Or am I a butterfly now dreaming that I am a man?”
